A Devon Couple’s Account of the Loss of the Ship, Eglantine

Jean of Dartmouth and his wife Peline report that in July of 1473, they were travelling aboard a Genovese warship named Eglantine when their voyage brought them to the port of Novgorod. During their stay, they purchased an apartment and made arrangements to continue their journey thereafter.

According to the couple’s statement, when the Eglantine departed the harbour, it was attacked and sunk near the port’s exit by a war carrack identified as the Nautilus, which they allege was commanded by a Captain known as Mirka.

Jean and Péline state that they lost all their possessions in the vessel's destruction and remained stranded in Novgorod for several weeks. They eventually secured passage home and returned to Hastings in Sussex in September 1473.

In the months following their return, the couple reports that they attempted to locate the vessel they believe is responsible. Their search, they say, carried them across several ports and even as far as Scotland, though they were unable to confirm the whereabouts of the ship or its captain.

Having returned to Devon, Jean and Peline now state that they intend to pursue what they describe as “a different strategy” in their effort to obtain accountability for the destruction of the Eglantine and the loss of their livelihood.

In a Public declaration he wrote in Devon Inn

“We offer 100,000 pounds to any person who can provide lawful and verifiable proof regarding the fate of the pirate Mirka, an Artesian, and the war carrack known as the Nautilus.”
